The Mars Volta Return with First New Music in 10 Years, Plot Comeback Tour
They'll play Toronto's Massey Hall this October
Published Jun 21, 2022As luck would have it, that giant cube installation wasn't for nothing: after beginning to tease their reunion in 2019, the Mars Volta are officially back with their first new music in 10 years, as well as a run of tour dates.
New single "Blacklight Shine" is the long-awaited follow-up 2012's Noctourniquet. It comes alongside an 11-minute music video (er, short film?) — the song itself is less than three minutes long — directed by the band's very own Omar Rodriguez-Lopez. Bristling with percussion, the Latin-threaded tune sees Cedric Bixler-Zavala flexing his Spanish while leaning into the softer side of the band's sound, as they did on 2009's Octahedron.
Kicking off in Dallas, TX, on September 23, the prog rockers will get back out on the road for 13 dates. They'll play Toronto's Massey Hall on October 5.
While there's no word on whether there's an album to accompany "Blacklight Shine," we do know that one thing usually leads to another. Would they have gone to the trouble of setting up the elaborate activation cube in Los Angeles over the weekend if there wasn't more up their sleeves? Only time will tell — just hopefully less than a decade this time!
Tickets for The Mars Volta Tour go on sale this Friday (June 24) at 10 a.m. local time, with Ticketmaster presales beginning tomorrow (June 22).
