The Beths have shared their first new music of 2023. The New Zealand indie rock quartet have released the upbeat power pop single "Watching the Credits," out now via Carpark Records.
"Watching the Credits" was recorded during the studio sessions for the Beths' 2022 album Expert in a Dying Field.
Songwriter Elizabeth Stokes said in a press release that the band didn't include the song in the project because it felt "silly" and didn't fit. Stokes now explains that the song itself isn't silly, but rather its conception, borne of her transition from someone who would opt to read the synopses of movies instead of watching them to becoming a big movie person.
"Maybe I was drawn to absorbing content about a creative medium that had some things in common with music, but didn't feel quite so existential," she said. "I think I blurted all of that absorbed content out into this quite silly song."
The Beths recently wrapped up a North American tour that brought them to Toronto, where they showed off their comedic chops and musical gifts.
