TEKE::TEKE Announce Sophomore Album 'Hagata,' Share New Single "Garakuta"

The lead single is a protest song from the perspective of garbage

TEKE::TEKE are back::back! The Montreal psych-rock septet have returned with news of their sophomore record, led by new single "Garakuta." Hagata lands on June 9 via Kill Rock Stars. It follows the band's 2021 debut Shirushi.

"'Hagata' is a very deep word, something present but also something leftover from someone or something no longer there," vocalist Maya Kuroki explained in a press release. "It's like waking up from a dream, or being connected to the other side of something." The album was recorded in Mountain Dale, NY, with producer Daniel Schlett (The War on Drugs, DIIV, CHAI, Nick Hakim).

Named after the Japanese term for goods no longer considered useful, lead single "Garakuta" serves as an energetic battle cry from the perspective of garbage.

"I wanted it to sound like a big protest song from the point of view of the so-called trash, the garbage, as if they were living things, rallying and rebelling against us, humans," Kuroki told Consequence. "I started thinking that it could also be an analogy for anyone who's being cast out of society for being considered 'useless' or just different."

Juxtaposing smutty guitar riffs and the pervasive presence of a fanciful flute, the song feels both grounded in the junkyard and able to transcend this dumpster fire into something more hopeful.
