Taylor Swift Named 2022 Record Store Day Ambassador

She's planning a special vinyl release to celebrate being the first-ever global ambassador for the holiday's 15th anniversary

Check the RPM settings on your turntables: joining the ranks of Jack White, Dave Grohl, Pearl Jam, Metallica and Iggy Pop, Taylor Swift has been announced as the ambassador for Record Store Day (RSD) 2022. The pop star will serve as the holiday's first-ever global ambassador for its 15th anniversary.

Today, the event — currently managed by Michael Kurtz and Carrie Colliton in coordination with Andrea Paschal and Eric Levin — shared the news with a bulletin published to the Record Store Day website.

"We're pleased to bestow the Ambassadorial sash on to one of the biggest artists in the world," the organizers wrote. Swift is also reportedly plotting a special RSD release, with more details expected to follow in the coming weeks — and, knowing her, likely in the form of Easter eggs.

Special vinyl and CD releases have been part of the holiday since the first RSD took place on April 19, 2008, in the spirit of bringing music lovers together in local communities on every continent except Antarctica. These releases have since grown to include offerings from artists and labels both large and small.

"I'm very proud to be this year's Ambassador for Record Store Day," the singer-songwriter said in a statement. "The places where we go to browse and explore and discover music new and old have always been sacred to me."

She continued:

Record stores are so important because they help to perpetuate and foster music-loving as a passion. They create settings for live events. They employ people who adore music thoroughly and purely. Those people and shops have had a rough few years and we need to support these small businesses more now than ever to make sure they can stay alive, stay eccentric, and stay individual. It's been a true joy for me to watch vinyl sales grow in the past few years and we, the artists, have the fans to thank for this pleasant surprise. Happy Record Store Day, everyone! Stay safe out there.

You'd be hard-pressed to find a bigger champion for indie record shops as of late than Swift, who donated money to keep a Nashville store afloat and sent out signed copies of her album folklore to independent establishments.

She also was the top-selling artist on vinyl in the US last year, moving more than double the number of units compared to any other act between pressings of folkloreevermore and Red (Taylor'sVersion) [via Billboard].

Despite shortagesvinyl sales hit a new high at the end of 2021 — though CD sales are also up for the first time in 17 years, to which Swift was also a major contributor.

Record Store Day 2022 (Taylor's Version) is scheduled for April 23.
