Tanya Tagaq Announces New Album 'Tongues,' Shares Title Track

The record was inspired by chapters from her 2018 book 'Split Tooth'

Experimental artist and previous Polaris Prize-winner Tanya Tagaq has shared a video for "Tongues," the first single from a new album of the same name, arriving March 11 on Six Shooter Records

UPDATE (1/11, 2:45 p.m. ET): According to a recent tweet from Tagaq, the release date for Tongues has been pushed ahead to January 21.

The new album was produced by Saul Williams and was inspired by chapters from her 2018 book Split Tooth. According to a press release, the record "speaks not to horrors and crisis, as previous Tanya Tagaq albums wordlessly, powerfully encircled, but directly of these things. Tongues is Tagaq at her most explicit and specific."

The record's first single is eerie and foreboding, as Tagaq repeats phrases like "You can't have my tongue" and "you can't take that from us" over an off-kilter industrial rhythm. It comes attached to a Caitlin Veitch-directed video that features 3D animation from Omar Rivero.

Tongues will be the full-length follow-up to 2016's Retribution. In 2019, Tagaq released the 5-track EP Toothsayer
