Tak Matsumoto

Hana

BY Roman SokalPublished Jan 1, 2006

Released on the illustrious label of Steve Vai that is Favored Nations, Hana showcases the beautifully melodic guitar work of Japanese master Tak Matsumoto. Many of the tracks sprawl out in slow sweeping bliss, highly reminiscent of classical music of his country, while some moments fold out into a slight progressive modern style of music. If at the least, this album should be a top charting disc that should be played constantly at Asian restaurants, opening up all the senses and leaving them ready for a cosmic voyage into previously unexplored territory. Matsumoto is most definitely a gem of a player, and this disc is perhaps the only one thus far that portrays how the Gibson Les Paul guitar can go much further than just a shredding axe, but also one of mystery.
