Sydney

When We Were Safe

BY Sari DelmarPublished Feb 21, 2008

Black Box Recordings has been delivering solid hardcore and post-hardcore album after album (Rosesdead, Ten Second Epic) and while Sydney may not have the most unique songs to be heard, they keep said standards high. These cats sure do have a knack for writing catchy post-punk that’s ridiculously energising. These refined cuts come pummelling out of the speakers, ready to knock you off your feet. They deliver with an urgent punk edge songs that pop without the usual emotional, sappy lyrics bands so easily tend to attach to catchy pop rock. "The Exit” is potent live and the title track demonstrates their guitar work at its strongest. When all is said and done, Sydney are a band most at home on a live stage, not in your stereo, but they make use of this flat medium of music well, putting out a release that demonstrates their youthful and relentless drive surprisingly accurately.
