Fresh off guest curating the 2022 edition of Calgary's Sled Island festival, Sudan Archives has lifted the curtain on her sophomore album. The self-taught violinist and vocalist will share Natural Brown Prom Queen on September 9 via Stones Throw.

Following 2019 debut AthenaNatural Brown Prom Queen is said to be a homecoming for the artist born Brittney Denise Parks.

Over 18 tracks, the artist is said to explore race, womanhood and the relationships at the centre of her life — whether in her adopted hometown of Los Angeles, or in Cincinnati where she was raised. Recent singles "NBPQ (Topless)," "Selfish Soul," and "Home Maker" all appear in the tracklist, and you can revisit them below.

In a praise note, author and poet Hanif Abdurraqib shares of the album, "Beyond its narrative sharpness, beyond its thematic generosity, the achievement of Natural Brown Prom Queen is, to me, not just in how it will summon you towards movement, but also the many ways it does that summoning, the many eras and sonic landscapes it calls to in order to do that work."

As previously reported, Sudan Archives will perform at both the Montreal Jazz Festival and Winnipeg Folk Festival this month, ahead of visiting Vancouver, Toronto and Ottawa on a 2022 North American tour this fall.
