Studio

"West Side"

BY Cam LindsayPublished Jul 6, 2007

Not the friendliest name to Google, Sweden's Studio (aka Dan Lissvik and Rasmus Hägg) are masters of assimilating their many influences. Nothing's too obvious, but you can hear everything from the Durutti Column and Manuel Göttsching, to Neu! and Giorgio Moroder in their sleek oeuvre. "West Side" actually sounds an awful lot like !!! in slow motion: the snaky bass slithers, the guitars chop with a digital delay and the tribal congos intersect with the processed beats. It's beautifully layered and the patience it demands is refreshing, much like the rest of their debut full-length, Yearbook 1 and this month's West Coast 12-inch.
