Ed Sheeran may not have garnered Grammy nods in any major categories this year (and his fans aren't very happy), but he can now lay claim to the title of Spotify's most streamed artist of the year.
The streaming service revealed that Sheeran racked up more streams globally than any other artist in 2017, with a total of 6.3 billion streams. His album ÷ was the most streamed album with 3.1 billion plays, while his single "Shape of You" was the top song with 1.4 billion streams.
Rounding out the list of the Top 5 most streamed artists of the year were Drake, the Weeknd, Kendrick Lamar and the Chainsmokers.
While no female artists made the Top 5, Rihanna, Taylor Swift and Selena Gomez were the most streamed women of the year.
As for the albums that trailed Sheeran's ÷, Drake's More Life, Lamar's DAMN., the Weeknd's Starboy and Post Malone's Stoney rounded out the list of most streamed albums.
Notably, Spotify claims that hip-hop saw a 74 percent jump in streams over the last 12 months, while Latin music jumped 110 percent — which can probably be attributed to the second most streamed song of the year: Luis Fonsi, Daddy Yankee and Justin Bieber's "Despacito."
The most hilarious category, however, has to be the list of emerging genres. "Melodic power metal" topped the list, while the sweet sounds of "chaotic black metal," "chillhop," "cinematic dubstep" and "vintage swoon" also saw a rise in popularity this year.
