South African DJ/rapper Spoek Mathambo is celebrating his 27th birthday today (July 2) by dropping a freebie release titled Escape from '85.
The conceptual project fetes Mathambo's birth year and finds him rapping atop synth-and-sample-spiked tributes to era-appropriate cuts from Madonna, Queen and Prince. Joining in on the fun are Yadi, BB James, Cherry B and more.
"In general it was a great time for the beginnings of house and techno, innovations in hip-hop, pop," Mathambo told Dazed Digital.
