Spiral Beach Spinoff Moon King Announce 'Obsession I' EP

BY Alex HudsonPublished Jul 24, 2012

Since Spiral Beach's breakup, the band have produced one successful spinoff in Doldrums, and now another is quickly making headway. The band's Daniel Benjamin and Maddy Wilde have re-teamed as Moon King, and on August 14 they will release Obsession I via One Big Silence.

This twelve-inch EP follows the duo's previous seven-inch single and Big Dumb Blue Angel cassette. According to a press release, this latest collection features "two singers [weaving] dreamlike harmonies over buzz-saw guitars and electronic percussion," likening the whole deal as some mutant cross between Cocteau Twins and Disco Inferno.

The songs, which were penned by Benjamin, reportedly "appeal to our darker subconscious desires, revelling in the embrace of fear and ego as a means of escape." The EP was self-produced and then mixed by Shane Stoneback (Sleigh Bells, Cults, Fucked Up).

Come back next week for the premiere of a music video for "Only Child," and look for Exclaim.ca to stream the whole EP closer to its August release date. Also, you can pre-order the EP here on the One Big Silence website.

CLARIFICATION: As some commenters have pointed out, Spiral Beach's Dorian Wolf also went on to play in Austra, though we somehow doubt many fans consider the band a Spiral Beach "spinoff."
