There are any number of exceptional bands that can competently take a style and play it with conviction, but it takes something truly special to either help create a style, or improve on it. Soilwork are incredibly proficient at playing progressive thrash metal, laden with heaps of the "Gothenburg sound." Comparisons to At the Gates, In Flames and Carcass are more than justified - melodic riffs, harmonised solos, tons of double kick and complex song arrangements litter The Chainheart Machine. The fact that it is incredibly well done doesn't change the fact that you've heard it all before, and just a little bit better.
