Snotty Nose Rez Kids Share New Single "Uncle Rico," Announce West Coast Tour

The hip-hop duo will play Vancouver and Victoria later this year

Snotty Nose Rez Kids are back with "Uncle Rico" — another tease of their forthcoming fourth full-length album, due later this year. They've also announced a run of West Coast tour dates that will bring them home to BC for shows at Victoria's Capital Ballroom on November 11 and the Commodore Ballroom in Vancouver on December 30.

"Uncle Rico" follows Snotty Nose Rez Kids' prior single "Something Else" — a celebration of Indigenous excellence. The new track is a hallmark of the duo's signature Indigenous trap genre: it begins with glimmering strings straight out of a Hans Zimmer score before being overtaken by a skittering beat and glitchy counter-melody. Naturally, "Uncle Rico" is a family affair that addresses intergenerational legends and the dynamics of getting together with relatives.

Of "Uncle Rico," Yung Trybez and Young D said in a statement:

Everybody has that uncle in the family that reminisces about the glory days — talks about himself in a big way and often boasts about what he used to be, could've been or what he thinks he is — but the rest of the family don't necessarily see it that way. We wanted to make some subtle references to Uncle Rico from Napoleon Dynamite in the video because the movie is dope and he is that personification of what we're talking about. The song is really about ego — that inner ego that everyone holds within them.

Directed by Sterling Larose and starring Cody Lightning — who Yung Trybez and Young D have been big fans of since his breakout role on Smoke Signals — as the titular character, we're all invited to a summer classic: the backyard barbecue. Everyone's favourite wacky uncle Rico has come to town and declared himself grill-master, sporting a speedo and his finest chain to go on ad nauseam about how he used to be able to throw a pigskin a quarter mile back in '82.

Yung Tybez and Young D also recently spoke about music industry upheaval in the COVID-19 era on Exclaim!'s panel of Canadian artists.
