Despite being on the independent alt-rock scene from 1991-1999, Chicago's Smoking Popes are one of those bands that never garnered the respect they deserved until breaking up. In the past decade, though, they've blossomed into one of those "legendary" acts that everyone claims to have seen. It actually prompted them to reunite for one show back in 2005, and that went so well, they're still going.
Perhaps this is all why Asian Man Records has jumped at the chance to reissue a few releases from the band's six-disc legacy - both official albums and compilations - over the next while.
Says label head Mike Park, "Matt Caterer of the Smoking Popes had asked me a few months back about Asian Man working with the Popes and in particular their back catalogue. Well, being a huge fan I of course was very excited and so I am here to confirm the following releases to be coming out on Asian Man."
First, Park says the label will be compiling the Innoculator, Break Up and other 7-inches on a single CD/vinyl release. The label is also planning a remastered reissue of the band's 1993 Johann's Face album, Get Fired and finally, the band's major label debut Born to Quit.
The first release will come out in the fall of this year and each release will be marked by a show in the band's hometown.
