The debut LP from Vancouver quintet Slim Fathers is fittingly titled Old Fruit. While the recording sessions were done recently, the combo's drummer Chris van der Laan and guitarists Mark Colavecchia and Dann Tompkins have been tweaking the tunes for a few years now. The trio had previously primed the songs for their old band Baby Control, but lineup trouble caused the act to regroup as Slim Fathers with Twin River singer Courtney Christine Ewan and bassist Tom Hillifer.
The 10-song set touches on the distorted Sonic Youth-isms of Baby Control, with Ewan manning the mic with a brattier, more shouted-out tone than her country-hewn coo in Twin River. Slim Fathers play it mechanized and monstrous on avant mosh cut "Curry in the Car," but break out '90s-era grunge-pop melodies on slightly sweeter-sounding songs like "Wizards" and "Heavy Weight."
