Sleeping Giant

Sons of Thunder

Sleeping Giant don't back down on their second album, which is sure to make the original sons of thunder proud — the Biblical figures (James and John), not the glorious Walker, Texas Rangerspin-off. The nine-song offering continues their meandering through hardcore chugging and breakdowns (where they shine), framed with metal elements, sans shredding ("The Streets Don't Lie" and "The Army of the Chosen One"). The title track jumps out, beginning with light guitar work and a voice quoting scripture before melodic singing introduces the song — the pace is slow but intense as a deep growl enters halfway through the track. The band don't make excuses for their beliefs, interspersing prayers and Biblical passages between tracks and in their lyrics. And they strip all the grit away for closer "He Will Reign," which could easily fit in at a "hip and happening" youth church. Whether it's a deterrent for some listeners or not, Sons of Thunderpacks a powerful punch worth stepping in front of.
