Folk singer Karen Dalton has become latest iconic musician to have her unreleased lyrics turned into new songs by contemporary musicians. One of the contributors to the forthcoming Remembering Mountains: Unheard Songs by Karen Dalton is Sharon Van Etten, whose contribution to the album can be heard now.

Van Etten recorded the title track "Remembering Mountains." She interprets the song as a slow-burning piano ballad, with the melancholic words proving to be a good fit for the Van Etten's aching arrangement. Hear it below [via Stereogum].

Remembering Mountains: Unheard Songs by Karen Dalton will be out on May 26 through Tompkins Square. Other contributors include Julia Holter, Marissa Nadler, Lucinda Williams, Patty Griffin, Isobel Campbell (formerly of Belle & Sebastian), Laurel Halo and more.

Dalton died in 1993. None of the music she released in her lifetime included original songs, but she left behind writings and notebooks, which provided the basis for this album.
