For a genre that is constantly characterized as being brutal and aggressive, inaccessible to anyone who is not into the extremely extreme, metal can also be incredibly melodic and beautiful, sounding more informed by prog and classical music than punk or hardcore. Saturnian Mist are a band who don't shy away from melody at all, and in embracing that side of their sound, open up a world of possibilities for their layered music.

Some of the best examples on their latest record, Chaos Magick, are the title track, "Martial Theosis" and "Chaos Unchained," on which heaviness and brutality are married with lilting, melodic riffs that characterize the essence of what metal has always been about. While they are catchy and fun, almost upbeat, they are still heavy and brutal enough to keep out those who aren't down with the beast.

Chaos Magick is a must for anyone who is interested in black metal, melodic death metal, mysterious black metal or the future of underground metal. This seminal album is sure to be remembered as a classic, and has the staying power of some of Saturnian Mist's strongest predecessors.
