Red Hot Chili Peppers have been working on a new album, their first since classic-era guitarist John Frusciante rejoined the band. Now, producer Rick Rubin has shared an update on the album, and he also revealed just how emotional he felt when he heard the reunited band perform together.

On wrestler Chris Jericho's Talk Is Jericho podcast, Rubin said that he cried when he heard them play. "I went to the first rehearsal that I was invited to after John rejoined the band, and it made me cry," he said. "It was so thrilling to see that group of people back together, 'cause they made such great music for such a long time together. It really hit me in an emotional way."

While he didn't explicitly confirm that he's producing the album, he did confirm that he's working with them on it. This marks the first time RHCP have worked with Rubin since 2011's I'm with You, as the band worked with Danger Mouse on 2016's The Getaway.

"We're finishing their new album right now, actually," Rubin said. "[John] Frusciante's back in the band and it's unbelievable. Unbelievable."

Rubin's comment suggests that the album isn't quite done yet. Previously, drummer Chad Smith reportedly told fans that the album was complete, while Frusciante's barber shared all sorts of info about the album and said it would be out this summer.

Listen to Rubin on Talk Is Jericho below. Rubin offers his RHCP progress update at around the 42:35 mark.
