What exactly does the future hold for Radiohead? Things sounded very uncertain last year, when Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood were touring with the Smile, and Ed O'Brien said, "There's no Radiohead at the moment." Well here's something a bit more promising: drummer Philip Selway revealed that the band are getting together in early 2023 to discuss plans.
Speaking with Spin, he was asked about the possibility of a 20th anniversary reissue of 2003's Hail to the Thief (akin to 2021's KID A MNESIA set). He said, "We've been very focused on the whole Kid A/Amnesiac thing, and I think that's coming to its natural conclusion, going back through the reissue and [creating] the game scenario around that. We're going to get together at the start of [2023], and I'm sure we're going to start looking at other ideas for what comes next. Hail to the Thief — it's a long time since that record, isn't it?"
It's unclear if those "ideas for what comes next" include working on new music, or if he's strictly referring to reissues. In the same interview, Selway spoke enthusiastically about Yorke and Greenwood's work with the Smile, saying, "To see it from the other side was fantastic." He also complimented Tom Skinner's jazz drumming.
He also directly addressed Radiohead's breakup rumours. "As far as I know, we're still a band," he joked. "If anybody knows any different, I'd be very interested."
It's been nearly seven years since Radiohead's last album, 2016's A Moon Shaped Pool, marking their longest break between albums. Meanwhile, the Smile have been playing new material on tour.
