R.E.M. released their debut EP Chronic Town 40 years ago, in summer 1982, and the defunct band are celebrating the anniversary with a reissue. This includes the first-ever standalone CD release of the EP.

The reissue arrives on August 19 through I.R.S./UMe — just a few days prior to the official 40th anniversary on August 24.

The CD comes with liner notes by original producer Mitch Easter. There will also be picture disc and cassette editions. Additionally, R.E.M. will release a Chronic Town merch line including a cassette player, a skateboard deck, T-shirts and more.

All of these can be pre-ordered here. All editions of the EP will feature the original five-song tracklist.

Meanwhile, R.E.M. vocalist Michael Stipe recently gave an update on his in-process solo album.

Chronic Town:

1. Wolves, Lower
2. Gardening at Night
3. Carnival of Sorts (Boxcars)
4. 1,000,000
5. Stumble
