Based in Los Angeles, Quiñ defines her sound as "fantasy soul." And while this isn't her first project — last year's Galactica project was overlooked by many — Dreamgirl effectively serves as an introduction to her unfolding brand of music. It alternatively grooves, it's inherently danceable and it has the right amount of soul to earn your attention.
At five tracks, we get a taste of the singer-songwriter's dreamy atmospherics: "The Beginning" is grounded but moody ("I'm slowly dissolving / In your world cuz is my world is so far away"), "Sailboat" delivers a slow-drip of trippy soul and "Sticky Situations," featuring Syd, is a sexed-up slice of electro-soul ("You weren't the one I wanted anyway / I only pursued you for the booty, babe").
Dreamgirl isn't groundbreaking, but the way it aims for the stars anyway is charming and enjoyable. Quiñ is steadily building up her profile, and this EP helps show why she's one to watch.
