Booked and busy is putting it lightly where Brad Weber is concerned. The Toronto-based producer and Caribou touring member has just announced his new EP Sea Steps is on the way under his moniker Pick a Piper. The record is expected to arrive on December 3 via Tin Angel, but to satiate us for now, Weber has dropped its lead song, "Keep Your Head Up."
As the title suggests, "Keep Your Head Up" is a welcome celebration of those who fill our lives with purpose. "Overall, the message is one of encouragement, self-worth and appreciation for those around us that lift us up and make our days not just tolerable but worth living," Weber said in a statement on the single. "I aimed to make a dance track that never truly drops or gives the listener the closure they need. Instead, it takes them on a short journey that perhaps asks more questions than it answers."
Woozy synth stabs and pads alongside dynamic kick drums, and live percussion blend to produce a hypnotic feast of a track. Vocals fade in and out at an increasing pace to further remove any sense of closure for listeners.
Since Weber released the LP Sight as Pick a Piper in 2019, the musician has been going non-stop. In addition to co-founding the record label Stereo Ferment in the early pandemic days, he released a third EP under his other handle, Coy Haste.
Who knows what Weber will do next — but if "Keep Your Head Up" is any indication, we can expect to find an addictive listen in Sea Steps.
