Pharaoh's Daughter

Exile

BY Coreen WolanskiPublished Dec 1, 2002

The best part of this entire release is that it is impossible to classify. Folk, electronic and world music enthusiasts will all find this a suitable addition to their stash, as will anyone who appreciates a seductive female vocal. Middle Eastern instruments and rhythms flavour all 11 tracks, giving them all a mysterious and ancient feel. Coming out of New York’s Jewish alternative music scene, Pharaoh’s Daughter is bound to be embraced beyond just that crowd. They have that Dead Can Dance sort of appeal and bare striking similarities to Norwegian act Bel Canto. Mellow and, at times, dark and brooding, Exile blends the traditional with the contemporary beautifully.
