Pavement Announce Reunion Performances in 2020
Published Jun 01, 2019Nearly a decade since Pavement's last reunion tour, the legendary indie rockers have announced that they will be performing again in 2020.
The band's took to Facebook to announce reunion performances at the 2020 editions of the Primavera Sound festival in Barcelona and NOS Primavera Sound in Porto.
The announcement states the two performances are "the only two shows we will play in 2020." An announcement tweet from Primavera reiterates this point, calling them Pavement's "only two worldwide shows in 2020."
Pavement initially broke up in 1999 but announced their first reunion tour in 2009, with dates throughout 2010, including a show on the Toronto Islands with Broken Social Scene, Beach House and Band of Horses.
In a 2018 interview with Exclaim!, Pavement member Stephen Malkmus shot down the idea of a 30th anniversary Pavement tour in 2019, but said that Pavement "could play again" and "in a fantasy world, if the band were really into it, I would consider it, I guess. But I haven't gotten that feeling."
In May, Malkmus appeared on the "Rolling Stone Music Now" podcast, and told host Brian Hiatt that the odds of Pavement reuniting were "realistic" and "if people are really psyched about it, I'd be psyched about it too."
This marks the latest in a string of Pavement-related news: Malkmus and fellow Pavement alum Scott "Spiral Stairs" Kannberg separately released albums in March — Groove Denied and We Wanna Be Hyp-No-Tized, respectively — while defunct Pavement affiliates Silver Jews recently reformed as Purple Mountains, with a self-titled debut album coming this July.
See the reunion announcements below. At this rate, expect Pavement to announce their next reunion in 2029, with dates in 2030.
