Papa Roach's Jacoby Shaddix Says He's "So Much More Fucking Punk Rock" Than Fred Durst

"I hated [the nu metal movement], I couldn't stand it"

Is your life in pieces? Is this your last resort? You're not alone.

Papa Roach bandleader Jacoby Shaddix was once right there with you, and now he's back to assure us all that he's actually "so much more fucking punk rock" than Limp Bizkit's "Dad Vibes" purveyor Fred Durst.

In a new interview with Metal Hammer, Shaddix reflected on the nu metal movement of the early aughts that helped break his band's 2001 debut Infest — and how much he wasn't into it.

"I hated it, I couldn't stand it," the vocalist said [via Louder]. "Everyone was trying to compare me to Fred Durst and I was like, 'I am so much more fucking punk rock than this dude. He's on the hip-hop side.'"

He added: "No disrespect to Fred. I think he's fucking great at what he does, and I dig him."

Back in 2019, Shaddix did a radio interview with Bret Vesely of KUPD, where he expressed similar feelings about the genre and the comparisons drawn between him and Durst, saying [via BLABBERMOUTH]:

It was always a weird thing for us. With the nu metal kingpins, the top dogs were Limp Bizkit at the time, and I wasn't on the same page as Fred [Durst]. I considered myself more of a punk rocker at that time. But we weren't a punk band — we knew that we weren't a punk band. But all the bands that we played with from 1993 up to 1999, they were all the local punk groups and the emo bands, and we were the odd man out all the time. But now, I look back on it, and I'm, like, yeah, we were a nu metal band for a few years — we were definitely a nu metal band. But for us, we kind of outlived the tag of nu metal and just became more of a rock band.

"It was a new interpretation of what metal music could be and we were pulling inspiration from all over the place," the musician continued of the era in his more recent nu metal musings. "Ministry were an influence, Faith No More were an influence — they were like the OGs of nu metal. They hate to own it, but they are. Mike Patton, you fucking motherfucker, you started it."

It makes you wonder: what is nu metal, really? Perhaps it's whatever you want it to be.

Korn's Jonathan Davis recently called his band's collaboration with Durst "the worst song ever," also saying no offence to the Limp Bizkit bandleader, so hopefully nothing can ruin his immaculate (dad) vibes — not even Google mistaking convicted killer Robert Durst for his father.
