On July 24, 1990, Pantera power-grooved their glam metal past into obliteration with the release of their major label debut, the now-classic (and certified platinum) Cowboys from Hell. To celebrate the 20th anniversary of the album, Rhino Records is now reissuing it in two formats on September 13, with a special "ultimate" edition to follow in November.
The album will see reissue as a three-disc "ultimate edition," a three-disc "deluxe edition" and a two-disc "expanded edition." A full tracklisting for all three is below, but it is a bit confusing, so let's try to clarify things a bit here.
All three editions feature a freshly remastered version of the album, as well as unreleased and rare live songs from the album's tour. The ultimate and deluxe versions will feature a CD of unreleased demos for ten of the album's 12 tracks, as well as the gem that has Pantera fans popping big-time sweatpants boners: an unreleased song called "The Will to Survive" that was recorded during the CFH sessions.
As for the live disc, which all three versions contain, Pantera diehards may have some, or all, of the material already, but some of it has never been released commercially and some was only released in Australia. The disc features seven songs recorded for a live radio broadcast on September 15, 1990, at the Foundations Forum metal convention in California. The rest of the disc is the five-song Alive and Hostile EP, which was recorded at the Monsters of Rock festival in Moscow in 1991 and until now was only available in a 1994 Australian box set.
The ultimate edition is the deluxe edition packaged in a box featuring replica memorabilia pieces from that era of the band. No exact release date is set yet, but it will be released in November.
The reissues also feature liner notes from the surviving members of the band and Terry Date.
