Overproof Soundsystem

Nothing to Proove

BY Cheryl RossiPublished Jun 1, 2004

This debut album is patchy, unless you’re a fan of cheesy reggae. Things pick up by the fifth track, "Get With It,” with its playful rhythm and groovy saxophone. "Fussing and Fighting” is reminiscent of Musical Youth’s "Pass the Dutchie” and the chilled "War Must Cease” is enhanced by tinkling piano. Overproof Soundsystem tidies and polishes the Mad Professor’s "Kunta Kinte” and Cheshire Cat offers up smooth and pleasing vocals in the final track, "The Herb.” This Birmingham-based group is comprised of Jah Grizzly and Stallion from G-Corp, vocalists Ras MC T-Weed and Juggla and the Mighty Magoo on percussion. In addition to Cheshire Cat, Kenijah Boothe provides guest vocals.
