In 2010, Okkervil River turned their focus away from their own music, acting as psych rock legend Roky Erickson's backing band on the comeback album True Love Cast Out All Evil. This year, the band will be focusing on their own tunes once more, as they will release a new single on February 8 via Jagjaguwar.
The single contains two new tracks: the A-side "Mermaid" and the B-side "Walked Out on a Line." According to the fan site Down the Oubliette, "Mermaid" was previously featured in the 2008 indie rom com In Search of a Midnight Kiss.
According to a product description on Music Direct, "Mermaid" is a waltz that is "the darkest song you'll hear all year: a self-contained fable shot through with evocative and disturbing imagery but rising to a sweeping, romantic, oddly moving climax." The B-side, meanwhile, is reportedly "choral and atmospheric and stripped of any of the acoustic textures that have defined much of the band's past work."
The single will come out on twelve-inch vinyl. For those without a record player, it will also be available digitally. See the album cover above.
