The last we heard from Sandro Perri, the genre-hopping multi-instrumentalist from Toronto, he was indulging his singer-songwriter sensibilities under his own name. Now, Perri has assumed the pseudonym Off World in order to release a series of ambient-leaning collaborative records he's been working on over the past few years. The first instalment of the planned trilogy, 1 consists of a set of breezy ambient jams produced with an arsenal of vintage synths, and later coloured with organic instrumentation.
The opening and closing tracks are the standouts; "Choral Hatch" features a meditative piano line slowly and impulsively exploring its scale, while "Wonder Farm" paints an exotic soundscape atop an off-kilter, pitter-patter rhythm. The other tracks feature some interesting sonics, though they don't tend to develop into anything more than atmosphere pieces.
This project won't be as accessible as Perri's recent work under his own name; like his even earlier efforts under other aliases, 1 may speak to a small audience. For fans of understated ambient electronica with a nice human touch, though, it's well worth looking into.
