Following the release of his All Melody album in 2018, Nils Frahm rounded out the year with four performances in Berlin, which will now be chronicled with a new live album and concert film.
Tripping with Nils Frahm arrives December 3 from Erased Tapes, while its accompanying film will launch that same day through online cinema MUBI.
The concert film was directed by Benoit Toulemonde, who captured Frahm's four performances at Funkhaus Berlin in December 2018 using handheld cameras. As Frahm told Exclaim! that year, the German recording complex is also where he built his dream studio to record the album.
Exclaim! previously named All Melody one of the Top 10 Experimental & Modern Composition Albums of 2018. Last year, Frahm shared companion collection All Encores, while standing as one of our 10 Best Experimental Music Figures of 2019.
Of the forthcoming album and film, the pianist shared the following statement:
It was about time to document my concerts in picture and sound, trying to freeze a moment of this period where my team and I were nomads, using any method of travel to play yet another show the next day. Maybe tonight is the night where everything works out perfectly and things fall into place? Normally things go wrong with concerts, but by combining our favorite moments of four performances, we were able to achieve what I was trying to do in these two years of touring: getting it right!
When you hear the applause on the end of the film you should know that I was smiling happily, being a tad proud and feeling blessed to share these moments with you.
Much love, Nils
