New Pavement Material "Inevitable," Spiral Stairs Says

From their formation in 1989 to their break-up ten years later, Pavement had an almost untarnished record of awesomeness, releasing five much-loved albums and becoming one of the most influential indie bands of their generation. As previously reported, the group are together again, and next year will be gambling their legacy by playing a world tour.

According to an interview with Australian newspaper The Age, the band may be taking this reunion one step further by writing new material. According to Scott Kannberg (aka Spiral Stairs), new songs will be "inevitable," if the reunion goes well.

"If I was a fan of the band, I'd want to hear some new music, but we're just going to see how it goes," he said. "We're taking it one step at a time."

This contradicts multi-instrumentalist Bob Nastanovich's earlier claims that there will no new material. As for whether this means the band will be heading into the studio to record a new album, we'll just have to wait and see.

Currently, the band have tour dates scheduled in Australia and Europe, as well as five North American shows: Sasquatch! Music Festival, plus four nights in New York's Central Park. As for what the shows will entail, Kannberg promised a selection of songs from throughout Pavement's career, the hits "and some misses." He added, "We're doing some pretty fun shows... It's not going to be like a regular tour."

Although he stated that the Pavement tour would take "precedence," Kannberg also revealed that he would be playing solo shows whenever possible. "I'm going to do some select shows throughout the year. I played a couple of shows in Melbourne when I was there a couple of months ago and might do some more in March when Pavement come around; I might try to put together a show."

Pavement are also planning a best-of compilation, which should be released to coincide with the tour.
