Neneh Cherry's exploring a few of her favourite tunes on her upcoming The Cherry Thing LP, with one such song being Madvillain's "Accordion." Her version, performed with Scandinavian jazz trio the Thing, plays much differently than the smoothed-out track off the MF Doom and Madlib project's 2004 LP Madvillainy, though.
As you can see in the video down below, gone are the hip-hop clack, Doom's patented mumble and, well, an accordion line, replaced instead with stand-up bass, skronking sax and off-kilter free jazz drums. Cherry, meanwhile, alternates between smokily sung lines, a few beat poet-styled verses and she comes to full screech delivering that line about how she's "got more lyrics than a church's got 'ooh lords.'"
As far as the visuals go, it's a pretty low-key affair with Cherry walking around outside under a night-vision glow. Every once in a while, though, a shot of Doom's famed mask flashes across Cherry's visage.
The Cherry Thing arrives June 19 through Smalltown Supersound.
