Minotaurs released their latest album just a few months back, but band leader Nathan Lawr has already turned his attention to a different project: a solo album. Chance Encounter is out on June 4 on Static Clang Records, and the entire thing is already up on Bandcamp.
This is Lawr's third solo album, following 2005's Secret Carpentry (his 2007 album, A Sea of Tiny Lights, was released as Nathan Lawr and the Minotaurs). The album's genesis dates back to 2009 at Cosmic Dave's Sound Emporium in Sudbury, ON, where Lawr began working with prior collaborator Dave McKinnon. From there, Andy Magoffin (Two Hours Traffic, Cuff the Duke, Great Lake Swimmers) oversaw sessions at House of Miracles in Preston, ON.
According to a press release, the lyrics includes "stories about Che Guevara and Fela Kuti, living in a union town like Sudbury, strained but unbeatable friendships and unstoppable break-ups, love and sex, and the secret to success." The music, meanwhile, follows a "folk/rock/pop impulse."
