Following the release of last year's Crooks & Lovers LP comes Mount Kimbie's Carbonated, featuring that former record's "Carbonated," plus two remixes of it, a remix of "Adriatic" (also from Crooks & Lovers) and two more originals. Mount Kimbie is the extravagantly imaginative UK duo of Dom Maker and Kai Campos. The two met at South Bank University in South London, where the student halls were converted from an old asylum. There is a type of manic, shadowy energy underlying their music that might have been channelled from that old building. Noticed on the Klaus remix of "Adriatic," this experimental horror movie-inspired soundscape succeeds in provoking a yawn. The rich organic artistry found on the original "Carbonated" is unfortunately not matched here, the exception being "Flux," which demonstrates a masterful synchronicity of variant sounds. "Baves Chords" was recorded back in 2009, but wasn't considered for other EPs Maybes and Sketch on Glass. This is understandable, as the acoustic guitar pattern with echoes feels slow and unfinished. Die-hard fans should check this out for "Flux." Others should grab Crooks & Lovers for a proper introduction.
