Trilogie

BY David LewisPublished Dec 1, 2000

Opening with the bells of Montréal's Notre Dame cathedral, this EP follows the melancholy blueprint of the band's brooding debut. If the stark minimalism of "Saint Catherine" and "Lisa's waltz" suggest a creative cul-de-sac, the 14 minute deconstruction of "Amazing Grace" builds a wall of acoustic noise that is astonishing proof of this band's musical potential. Trilogie sustains a vision of estrangement and heartbreak that is ultimately unific. The attention to fine detail extends to an exquisite package sheathed in transparent Demerara gold.
