Mnemic

Mechanical Spin Phenomena

BY Laura TaylorPublished Jan 1, 2006

Mnemic are a groove-laden hybrid — parts of Fear Factory, Meshuggah, Obliveon, and the like, all colliding in an eruption of technology and technicality. It’s a rather successful offspring, but the groove works best in small doses rather than in a continuous stream. After making an effective opening with "Liquid” the band starts to lose stride with "Ghost” and continues from there with a series of lulls and peaks. Mechanical Spin Phenomena has an aesthetic of accessibility (perhaps on the Fear Factory side) that may turn off some purists but gives the band a decent potential for reaching out to the masses. All they need now is to get on the soundtrack of a good horror movie.
