It's Canadian hip-hop legend Michie Mee's birthday today, and to celebrate, she's shared videos for "Willing & Able" and "What You Talkin' 'Bout," both from last year's Bahdgyal's Revenge.
The pioneering rapper has also relaunched her website and announced a livestream concert called Michie Mee & Family 'On This Mic,' happening at Toronto's DC Music Sound Stage 7 p.m. ET on Sunday, November 21.
"Today is my 51st birthday, but I'm calling it my 50 do-over because of the pandemic" she said in a press release. "I thought today would be the perfect time to release these two videos, re-launch my website, and announce details of my upcoming live stream show. It's gonna be a movie — well lit! Concert hall-style! "
"I just straight let 'em have it in a freestyle lyric-based rap," said Michie of "Willing & Able."
"Vintage mint condition play my position last disposition, rap musician, because music is what I do. I stand my ground on I'm you bahdgyal Aunty, a grown-ass woman still rapping. I know where you lil bahdgyals coming from I been doing it a long time. There are a lot of interesting references in this song," she added.
Meanwhile, "What U Talkin' 'Bout" is a metal-influenced standout on the record, inspired by Mee's time as a founding member of alt-rock band Raggadeath, who tore shit up in the '90s, finding the space between metal and dancehall.
