Although Michael Feuerstack's latest album features his own name on the cover, the former Snailhouse man doesn't actually sing any of the tunes on Singer Songer. Rather, he recruited a cast of notable guests to take the mic. Having premiered the songs one by one in recent weeks on Exclaim.ca and released the album on vinyl for Record Store Day, he's now sharing the full thing ahead its wide release on April 29 through Forward Music/Headless Owl.
The album is billed as Michael Feuerstack & Associates. These Associates include John K. Samson (of the Weakerthans), Little Scream, Bry Webb (of Constantines), Jim Bryson, Devon Sproule, Jessie Stein (of the Luyas) Leif Vollebekk, Mathias Kom (of the Burning Hell) and more.
Many of the songs are tunefully gentle, as Kom croons deeply on the earthy folk number "Along the Way," Stein sets a creepy mood on "Stories" and Little Scream sings the sparse acoustic ballad "Don't Wait Up." On the other hand, Samson's "Friday Night Guard" and Webb's "Did I?" are slightly more upbeat and rhythmic.
