Me First and the Gimme Gimmes

Take a Break

BY Stuart GreenPublished Aug 1, 2003

Having lovingly lampooned the ’60s, ’70s and show tunes on their three previous albums, this all-covers punk rock super-group sets their sights on soul, R&B and Motown for album number four. Members of Lagwagon, NOFX, Foo Fighters and Swingin’ Utters punkify R. Kelly ("I Believe I Can Fly"), Stevie Wonder ("Isn't She Lovely?"), Aretha Franklin ("Natural Woman"), Seal ("Crazy"), Prince ("Nothing Compares 2 U"), Westlife ("I'll Be There"), Vanessa Williams ("Save the Best for Last") and many more. What started out as a one-off novelty seems to have blossomed into a full-fledged concern and as long as they continue to fuck with convention with the same respectful irreverence, I say keep 'em coming.
