When planning a forest orgy, discretion is key. Maya Hawke and friends find that out the hard way in the new, NSFW video for recently released single "Thérèse," in which the Stranger Things star is taken in by the cops after being caught having a romp in the woods.
Directed by Brady Corbet, the shadowy, tender video speaks to the same kind of puritan panic and social conditioning that inspired "Thérèse," written for the subject of Balthus' controversial 1938 painting Thérèse Dreaming.
In an interview with Dazed, Hawke described the "Thérèse" video as depicting "the feeling that loneliness is the worst thing, until you realize it's far superior to bad company; about how free we are as kids and then as we go through puberty and culture crushes down on us and instead of being ourselves, we start to try and be like everyone else."
Hawke's sophomore album MOSS is arriving September 23. It's the follow-up to her 2020 debut Blush.
