Irish fiddle player Martin Hayes is a graceful, inventive instrumentalist who blends well with guitar player Dennis Cahill in this live duo concert. Cahill sounds content to provide rhythmic support until his first solo turn in “The Old Blackthorn” and the vibrant climax of “Dowd’s No. 9/Come West Along the Road.” Otherwise this is the fiddle player’s show and he’s at his best in the long medley and “Carraroe/Out On The Ocean.” However, while this is a very attractive Celtic project, all the hype from the NY Times about this music “being a Celtic complement to Steve Reich’s quartets or Miles Davis’s Sketches of Spain” is best ignored. Concentrate upon some sweet, sweet music instead and simply trust your ears.
