Who needs an attention span when you have the Mae Shi recording albums that fail to see the point of passing the 16-minute mark? These Los Angeles noisemakers fail to show theirs on their second full-length, Heartbeeps, and to be honest, it really works well for them. With a heavy concentration on short bursts of spunky stop/start art-punk, a la Deerhoof, the quartet move between flashing their angular guitars riffs and abrupt rhythms, and fiddling with electronic sound experiments on their ventures into the two-minute territory. Though not as copious as last years 33-track Terrorbird, Heartbeeps is a refreshing record that really takes little energy to finish and of course, enjoy.
