Lyrics Born

Same !@#$ Different Day

BY Vish KhannaPublished May 1, 2005

Though not a true follow-up to 2003’s Later that Day, this remix collection provides some amazing takes on Lyrics Born favourites, not to mention some stellar extra songs by the gifted MC. Jumbo does wonders producing a soaring version of "Hello” and the menacingly stark beats that back up guest spots from Dilated’s Evidence and KRS-One on the updated "Pack Up.” Dan the Automator provides an album highlight on the lazily playful dis, "I’m Just Raw,” which precedes LB’s astonishing look-out-below flow on the Young Einstein-helmed "Do That There.” International hit "I Changed My Mind,” featuring LB’s soulful crooning, gets two updates here — one courtesy of the Stereo MCs and the other thanks to DJ Spinna. DJ Shadow steps up to oversee collaborations with LB’s most prominent partners. The first is "The Last Trumpet,” a Latyrx reunion featuring Lateef the Truth Speaker and the second is "Over You,” which includes vocals by LB’s lady love, Joyo Velarde. Though "Callin’ Out” is barely altered, E-40 and Casual show up to get the party jumping. With its revelatory liner-notes (each song is contextualized by LB himself) and updated sounds, Same!@#$ Different Day is an essential album for both old and new fans of Lyrics Born.
