The SOCAN Songwriting Prize has announced the winners for its annual honours, voted for by fans from an industry panel-curated selection of finalists. Toronto multi-hyphenate Luna Li (a.k.a. Hannah Bussiere Kim) has won the English award for "Silver into Rain," while Saint-Prime, QC's Gab Bouchard takes the French award for "Ton shift est pas fini."

"It's an honour to be recognized by SOCAN and the community around me," Bussiere Kim said in a statement. "'Silver into Rain' is ironically a song about self-doubt and a lack of belief in myself, so to me this prize is a particularly meaningful symbol of support. I feel incredibly lucky to have so much encouragement early on in my career."

The track from last year's Duality — Bussiere Kim's debut full-length, a great Canadian album you might have missed — was made in collaboration with beabadoobee, while Bouchard penned his winning track with Mathieu Quenneville. Both winners get a $10,000 cash prize, a Yamaha musical instrument valued at up to $2,500 and a $500 gift card from Long & McQuade.

Last year's SOCAN Songwriting Prize honourees were Emily Steinwell and Hubert Lenoir. Songs by Jonah Yano, aRENYE, Maylee Todd, Saya Gray, Boslen, the Trade-Offs and Dacey were among the other finalists in the English category for 2023.
