Luke Kuplowsky is about to release his third full-length under his LUKA moniker, but before it arrives, Exclaim! is giving you an exclusive advance listen to What Kind of Animal in its entirety.
The new record follows last year's Summon Up a Monkey King and was recorded live-to-tape over a one-day session at the start of this year — a process that captured the "fragility and imperfection" of Kuplowsky's unique blend of poetry and music.
Much of the instrumentation was improvised with the help of his backing band composed of Evan Cartwright, Sam Gleason and Cory Harper-Latkovich.
The songs hear Kuplowsky's voice cutting through what he describes as a "sonic whirlwind of patient stillness and careening noise," and finds him wrestling with big-picture questions about self-doubt, integrity, companionship and faith.
What Kind of Animal is officially out on November 28, but you can stream it right now. Just scroll past LUKA's upcoming tour dates and hit play to give it a listen.
Tour dates:
11/25 Ottawa, ON - Pressed
11/26 Montreal, QC - House Show
11/28 Toronto, ON - The Baby G
