In an entirely new experimental chapter, Lone (aka Matt Cutler) has stepped up with a three-track EP, releasing new tracks while he works on his next studio album. Abraxas is the first physical release on his new imprint, Ancient Astronauts, set up to showcase new material in the interim.

This new exploration sees Lone dipping his toes into acid house with a touch of breakbeat, a sound he was inspired to bring to life after hearing '90s drum & bass with significantly slower BPM. Of the three tracks, "Young Star Cluster" and "How Can You Tell" try out this new sound, both using sporadic bursts of TB-303. The former opens with booming percussion and plays heavily with breakbeat, while "How Can You Tell" works a lot more with Lone's trademark ethereal, atmospheric style, while maintaining a crispness to its percussion and rolling in breakbeat as well.

Abraxas steers well away from what we've come to expect from Lone, while still holding onto some familiar flourishes. And while it's not his most gripping release to date, it's certainly worth digging into to experience a different take from the artist.
