Former Vampire Weekend member Rostam Batmanglij has returned with new material to follow up last year's singles, "Unfold You" and "Under Control." Today, Rostam has unveiled new solo material in form of a song titled "These Kids We Knew."

As he explained in a statement, the song was written last March while the artist was recovering from a case of COVID-19. The song, which deals in the themes of "urgency and innocence of youth," tackles the impending threat of global warming and "a fantasy of the younger generation arresting the adults and putting them on trial in the streets of cities around the world."

"I was thinking of three generations while I was writing this song," Rostam explained. "There's a generation of adults who don't see global warming as their problem because they think they won't be impacted by it. Then there's a generation younger than mine, who will certainly have to deal with what is happening."

Rostam's latest full-length was 2017's Half-Light. Batmanglij has yet to announce a follow-up to his solo debut.
