Lisa Loeb is mostly remembered for one song she released 30 years ago — but what a song it is! "Stay (I Missed You)" is an enduring hit, and Toronto Blue Jays fans know it as the song that plays every time pitcher Yusei Kikuchi gets a strikeout during a home game. Now, Loeb has responded to the song's current role in Jays lore.
A couple weeks ago, CityNews posted an interview with Kikuchi in which he spoke about hearing the song every time he strikes someone out, saying, "I love it. It's my favourite moment." On Friday (May 31), Loeb shared the interview, calling it "so cool."
Soon after, she responded to her own tweet, having figured out the joke: "Omg. I just got it. 'Yusei' is pronounced like the first two word of my song. Doh." She added a heart and a facepalm emoji.
"Stay (I Missed You)" begins with a poignantly sung "you say" — which, as Loeb pointed out, is why it's played for Yusei Kikuchi.
Kikuchi is next due to pitch on Thursday (June 6) for a home game against the Baltimore Orioles. With any luck, fans will hear plenty of "Stay (I Missed You)" in Rogers Centre. Given the season the Jays are having so far, fans need to take pleasure wherever they can!
